Western nations are grappling with what to do with the orphaned children of foreign fighters in the wake of the defeat of IS in Syria

Save the Children estimates at least 3,580 children of foreign fighters are in living in refugee camps in northern Syria. A number of them are orphans and face the prospect of being stateless if barred from their home countries.Aid group the International Rescue Committee says at least 100 children - half of the group aged under five - have died either from malnutrition at the camps or from freezing while being transported in trucks. if they are able to make it to an Australian embassy.
Chechnya leader Ramzan Kadyrov has spearheaded the repatriation effort, putting his resources into facilitating diplomatic negotiations for the children's return.Russian President Vladimir Putin in late 2017 backed the effort, describing it as"a very honourable and correct deed". "There should not be any doubt that the government is doing what we can for these children and, if possible, they will be brought to Sweden," Ms Wallström said in a Facebook post on 12 April.Of the 300 Swedish foreign fighters, about half have returned to Sweden, 50 are thought to have died in the conflict and another 100 remain in Syria or Iraq.
One-year-old Mohammed Skråmo, the youngest of Swedish IS fighter Michael Skråmo’s seven children, captured headlines after he was. He's reportedly severely malnourished and only weighs three kilos.
