Karen Hiam would 'be lost' without her assistance dog Brandy. But soon, her furry friend will be retiring, and Karen wants to avoid developing what's known as Successor Dog Syndrome.
Ms Hiam struck gold when Brandy came along seven years ago to replace her first assistance dog Gypsy, and the two have been inseparable ever since.
But the time is fast approaching for Brandy to retire and Ms Hiam will have to bid her goodbye and welcome Meg, her third assistance dog"I'd always think, 'Brandy, you're still the perfect one. I just hope this dog turns out like you.'" To better understand the syndrome and help reduce the rate of dogs being returned, Australian researchers have studied the relationships between dogs and their handlers or owners.
Before taking part in the research, only one of the 10 study's participants had heard of SDS, which Dr Oliva said highlighted the need for more awareness. What is Successor Dog Syndrome?
