An international investigation into the cause of the undersea implosion of a tourist submersible that killed all five people on board is underway. So, what happens next?
Captain Jason Neubauer, chief investigator with the US Coast Guard, says the salvage operations are ongoing, and authorities have mapped the accident site. He did not give a time line for the investigation.
"My primary goal is to prevent a similar occurrence by making the necessary recommendations to enhance the safety of the maritime domain worldwide," Captain Neubauer said at a press conference in Boston. Coast Guard officials say they include the vessel's tail cone, two sections of the pressure hull, the front-end bell and the aft-end bell. When asked if there was a chance of recovering the crew members' remains, the US Coast Guard's Rear Admiral John Mauger said he could not provide any prospects on that, but he stated: "This is an incredibly unforgiving environment down there on the sea floor … we'll continue to work and search the area down there.
Pelagic Research Services , the company that deployed the Odysseus 6K remotely operated vehicle , which first discovered the debris field, is still working on missions at the debris site in order to map and document the area and assist in any discovery of debris.Loading Twitter content
