A Sydney mayor declared Western Sydney 'has to be shut' to more arrivals until the government starts 'improving the quality of life' for people already living in the community, as Australia braces for a population surge over the next two years.
As the housing and rental crisis deepens, concerns are quickly being raised about where the influx of new arrivals will settle when they touch down in the country.
"Western Sydney has to be shut until the government actually starts thinking about improving the quality of life of people out here," he told the hosts. This financial year, Treasurer Jim Chalmers forecasts net overseas migration will reach 350,000, about a 50 per cent increase on what was predicted in the October budget.
"People need to understand that migrants are coming from overseas and will not be resettling in the eastern suburbs," he said.Asked where migrants should settle in the country instead, and if it was right to put restrictions on people coming here to live, Mr Carbone said Western Sydney had"always been generous". "Prior to COVID, there was 150,000 per year into Australia. Now the government has decided to bring in 650,000.
"It seems like the bureaucrats who live in a bubble in Canberra are planning for the budget not planning to improve the budget, not planning to improve the quality of life for people who already live here in Sydney, particularly in Western Sydney," he said.
