Australia’s first new airport in 50 years will be at the forefront of aviation technology, which should lower costs and passengers’ stress.

Australia’s first, large, new airport in 56 years, Western Sydney International Nancy-Bird Walton Airport, will put downward pressure on airfares and become a major logistical centre and source of economic growth in Western Sydney, chief executive Simon Hickey says.

“The more supply, then that will have a positive impact from a customer perspective on prices,” Hickey says, in an interview with“We’re not building a tin shed. We are building, ultimately, the gateway to Sydney.”The new airport, located at Badgerys Creek 45 kilometres west of the CBD, will have an initial capacity of 5 million passengers a year. Rival Sydney airport’s capacity is about 44 million.

Employees, customers and travellers reach the business park and airport by a new train line that will connect with St Marys on the T1 Western Line. The train journey from Penrith should take up to 25 minutes and up to 40 minutes from Parramatta, an airport spokeswoman said. The airport site, about 15 kilometres beyond the city’s western urban fringe, is surrounded by sparsely populated farmland.

Drivers will be able to book car parks in advance, which will reduce the stress of wondering if they will find a spot, and help them to calculate how long it will take them to walk to the terminal.
