A secret door leading to a concealed library is one of the star features of a West Gippsland home. Find out why the owners installed the door in their renovated 1930s house
Having a house with a door fitted into a bookcase was a long-held ambition for Ms Johns, who loves reading.She commissioned a local cabinet-maker to craft the bookshelves surrounding the door.The kitchen has cabinetry storage, stone top benches, an island, secret compartments in the drawers, a double-drawer dishwasher, butler’s pantry and servery window to the alfresco deck.
Ms John said she and her husband loved the house, which they purchased six years ago, but wanted to move to a more rural setting after previously living on a farm.The house has been renovated and extended. Putting in ducted heating and finding second-hand floorboards to match the existing ones was part of the project.
“I like lying in here and seeing the trees out the front and we have leadlighting in the front door,” Ms John said.The front sitting room could also be used as a fourth bedroom.A productive vegetable garden.
