“Known for his bright spirit, endless laughter and positive energy, Chuck made lifelong friends wherever he went,” stated Pat Byrne, a WFMU personality who helped organize the memorial. “A talented musician, and a frequent live performer since his teens, Chuck became a vital feature of the Jersey City music scene.”

Starting as a teenager, Daly founded or played in over a dozen bands, including King of Birds, Thunder Lizard Be Thy Name, All Rattle & Dust, and Any Day Parade. Chuck’s love for music also led to a career as a popular vinyl-only DJ, with residencies at many bars and clubs in the area, including the fabled Uncle Joe’s. Daly’s tenure at Lucky 7′s Tavern is credited with imbuing what is today considered Jersey City’s quintessential dive bar with its punk rock identity and clientele.

“Joe was one of many who thought we should try to rally his friends and do some kind of tribute, although we weren’t sure at first where we could hold that kind of event,” Byrne recalled. “But when we decided to do something, one of the first bands on everybody’s mind was Rye Coalition. There was no bigger fan than Chuck but also he was very early friends with all those guys when they were starting out.

Justin Angelo Morey, bassist for Rye Coalition, said he’s thinking of Chuck’s brother Joe this weekend.
