At a time when crazy inflation and a softening economy already have those of us out here in the real world badly spooked, it’s hard to see how the mayor, City Council members and city manager dig out of this mess and effectively work together again. Those voices included the three who eventually called for the investigation, Tennell Atkins, who was among those who first broached the idea of a departure to Broadnax, and Paula Blackmon, originally one of those most committed to moving this decision along quickly.

Johnson saw the pending council-city manager divorce differently, and his political experience told him that ripping off the bandage, while painful, made the most sense. Moving fast was a calculated risk but it made sense that dragging this out would simply give already squishy votes time to go even squishier.for even the few days leading up to what was expected to be Wednesday’s executive session and special called meeting vote.
