Master Gardener Laura Simpson answers your gardening questions.
Q. We just removed the grass from the curb of our house and planted baby ivy after removing as many weeds and grass as possible and spraying. But after the last rain, we got more weeds growing with our ivy plants. We have been weeding several days every week, but weeds/grass still come back. We used liquid fertilizer to help the ivy grow. How do we manage the growth of our ivy plants vs.
If you’re replacing turfgrass with a non-grass alternative, your options for weed control become limited. Most alternative ground covers are not as competitive because their roots aren’t as dense. Weed control becomes a challenge during the “filling in” period. Spot treatment with herbicide is tedious, and if there’s any overspray your groundcover will suffer.
Q. I’ve had a weed in our backyard for at least a year, and I see it throughout my neighborhood in Claremont. Can you identify it, please? I’m afraid I’ll have to just dig it out as I don’t like chemicals. The foliage looks clover-like, but the flowers are similar to the stinknet in your 2/11/23 column. And the burr-like seeds stick to my shoes.
The good news is that it’s relatively easy to pull since it’s got a single taproot from which the rest of the plant grows out in a fan-like pattern. Use a stick-weeding tool to loosen the taproot and pull it out. Always wear gloves for this task because those prickly burrs can be nasty. We had a huge problem with this particular weed, but we were finally able to essentially eradicate it from our property.Q.

For Years, Quiet Gilgo Beach Was a Place of ‘Murders and Mayhem’For a killer looking to hide evidence of his crimes, it was the perfect spot. The straight, quiet stretch of Ocean Parkway would give him plenty of time to listen and watch for coming cars. Just off the road, a tall bramble of bushes and weeds grew so thick and thorny, even trained cadaver-sniffing dogs could barely penetrate it. It was here that the bodies of four women were found in December 2010, wrapped in heavy burlap, on a gentle slope that falls away to the quiet marshland of Gilgo Beach
