JOHOR BARU: The Johor government’s decision to increase the allowance of local councillors beginning in January has been criticised by Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka SiongIn his Facebook post, the MCA president said the reason behind the move was absurd especially since the government was planning to introduce various kinds of taxes in 2020.
"Some of the reasons for this allowance increase are said to be due to the challenges that local councillors face, aside from the high cost of living.Dr Wee added that Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin had also recently announced a review of the assessment tax for local councils starting next year and had confirmed that there would be an increase from the current rate.
“When is the turn for the general workers and civil servants to enjoy the same salary increase of 60% to 100%?” he added. Dr Wee also said that Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Mahfuz Omar had stated that the government could not increase the salary of civil servants abruptly.
