KUALA LUMPUR: Increasing the number of places for the matriculation programme will make it more competitive for Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students to enter public universities, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.“At present, STPM and matriculation students are about 43,000 and 25,000 respectively.
“Assuming that the population and fertility rate is unchanged, in future we will have a surplus of matriculation students at about 60%, much higher than their STPM counterparts.
The programme was originally aimed at encouraging bumiputra students to pursue their studies in science. Noting that there has been precedence of at least 13% of non-bumiputra matriculation students, Dr Wee questioned the need to go backwards.
