Orographic comes from the Greek word óρος, meaning “hill,” and refers to certain types of clouds that only exist around elevated areas. Banner clouds, true to their name, can look like banners attached to the peaks of mountains. They form when a hill or mountain forces wind to lift. Since air cools as it rises, the water vapor within it condenses, forming a cloud. Banner clouds form on the sheltered side of the mountain, and will continue to appear stationary as long as the wind keeps flowing up the windward side.
