Bright green water at Centennial Beach nothing to fear, Naperville Park District officials say

This article is available exclusively for our subscribers, who help fund our work at the Chicago Tribune. The water at Centennial Beach in Naperville turned bright green this week, raising questions from residents. The Naperville Park District said the recent lack of rain and warm temperatures led to an increase in algae growth. Despite that, tests show the water's safe to swim in, the district said.
Naperville Park District officials acknowledged they have received comments residents questioning what they’re seeing and want to assure pool-goers there’s no reason to stay out of the water.“The recent lack of rain and warm temperatures have led to an increase in algae growth in many bodies of water, including Centennial Beach, which caused the water to become greener in color earlier in the week,” the district said in a statement issued Wednesday.
It’s not uncommon for Centennial Beach, which is not actually a pool but a former limestone quarry, to have algae growth during the course of the summer swim season, officials said. Staff is working to mitigate it to deter further growth, especially with temperatures expected to remain in the upper 80s and low 90s through Saturday, they said.
“But as a large body of water, the beach is not filtered like a typical swimming pool,” the district’s statement said.
