'Starting this week, the media and the voters will take the first serious look that they’ve taken at Bernie Sanders, in my view, in his entire professional life,” Bloomberg's campaign manager predicts
insisted that, even after that disastrous debate, it’s still a two-person race. From the sleek Bloomberg campaign headquarters in Times Square, he offered a stark argument to Democrats who want to beatin November: Mike is your only hope. Bernie Sanders may have a passionate slice of Democratic primary voters, but he won’t win in the six swing states that matter. Bloomberg, he said, has the money and national organization to go the distance, as well as a data operation to counter Trump’s.
Listen, I think Mike had not been on a debate stage since 2009. I think he was standing next to a Harvard-trained constitutional professor, contracts lawyer, who decided that he was going to be her target. And yeah, it can be a bit jarring if you’re someone who really wants to talk about what you want to do to fix the country.
And there is this almost, like, broad acceptance. Well yeah, you’re first across the line, but, you know, this really is a party primary. And the question is: Who should the party get behind? And I look at it a very different way, which is to say, well, shouldn’t the majority decide? You know, Bernie is basically arguing that a minority should decide the candidates for the party.
Let’s talk about a brokered convention scenario. Imagine Bernie has 35%, you’ve got 25%, and the rest the delegates are subdivided between Biden and others. What happens? What’s the endgame? But if you’re going to be a general election nominee, you have to deal with those raw feelings toward Mike’s billionaire status, toward the sense that he represents only money and moneyed interests. How are you going to deal with that?
And he’s become, again, to refer to Mike, to say Mike is just a billionaire, it’s just so crazy because Mike is so clearly so much more than that. And figuring out who the partners were with other surrogates because it’s not that you’d be dragging Mike out, you’d be going toand others to do great content to get people to the polls and understand the power of voting. And at the same time, you would have to try to message to folks out by Green Bay in a way that the candidate, let’s assume it’s Bernie, wouldn’t lose more than 60 to 40.
So you’ve got all this media out there, incredible data, great campaign, but people still don’t exactly know who he is. No one else in the country did that. It was such a radical idea [at] the time. It doesn’t seem so radical now. Mike said, “I’ll put my money in.” And he went toand asked him to match it, and Mike said, “Hey, if this works, we’re going to have the city pay for it, but we need a program to engage, principally, young men of color for discrimination they find so they don’t fall between the cracks. Because if they do, it’s a real problem for society, generally.
