Nemani Nadolo played for some of the world’s biggest rugby clubs, but he was always happiest playing for Fiji - even when he had to pay his own airfares to do so.
After being released by the Waratahs as a 21-year-old, the powerful Fijian winger starred for the Crusaders in New Zealand, Montpellier in France, NEC Green Rockets in Japan and Leicester Tigers in England before returning to NSW for one last hurrah at the start of the 2023 season.
“They’re always close as a team, but at this World Cup, they’re even more so. When the World Cup is over, everyone will be crying because they won’t want to leave and go back to their clubs.” “It’s the closest thing we’ll get to being back on the island,” Nadolo said. “There are guys walking in bare feet, guys drinking kava, it’s literally like we’re in the village.“This is what makes it special. It’s like, OK, boys, we play with what we’ve been given, we make do and that’s our culture. We’re a village and we make do with what we’ve got. It’s the same playing for Fiji.”
“No one in this team is a semi-professional. In the past, we’d be getting guys picked through the Shute Shield, but that’s not the case anymore. Everyone is a professional now and they’re all playing at the highest level.” “You have to be clinical at taking the opportunities when they come, because in a World Cup, there aren’t too many opportunities around.”
“Marika was always going to come into his own,” Nadolo said. “For his second season at the top level, I’d say he was a bit shaky at the start, but as the season progressed he just came into his own.
