Event Horizon Telescope project scientists unveiled the image at press conferences taking place across the globe.

Scientists have unveiled the first ever image of a black hole, showing a ring of light around the object’s event horizon. The announcement was made at press conferences taking place across the globe.

Sheperd Doeleman, EHT director, said black holes are “the most mysterious objects in the universe” and that until now, our “best idea of what they look like come from simulations.” Just before matter falls into a black hole, it becomes superheated, making it shine extremely brightly: “Infalling gas creates a ring of light. Then [there is] a dark patch that prevents light from escaping,” he said.“We worked for over a decade to link telescopes around the globe.

The EHT team linked telescopes around the world to create one virtual, Earth-sized telescope. Until now, the resolution of images of black holes was too low, so they just looked like a bright blur. The new image, Doeleman said, is equivalent to reading the date on a quarter in Los Angeles from Washington D.C.
