Series creator David S. Goyer shares his insight.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Foundation series creator David S. Goyer sheds light on the biggest deaths in season 2. Adapted from the award-winning novels by Isaac Asimov and streaming on Apple TV+, and following a group of exiles on their crucial journey to save humanity, the sci-fi adaptation ended its sophomore installment by unexpectedly killing off several characters and shifting the expected path of the story.
In an interview with Collider, Goyer spoke about the shocking deaths in the Foundation season 2 finale. The showrunner shared that he loved all three characters, adding that there are moments in which beloved characters need to be killed off. In the quote below, Goyer also talked about which plans changed and how the deaths will impact the Apple TV+ series moving forward:
I love all three of those characters, and I love all three of those actors. But I feel we’re on to something when we’re in the writers’ room when the plot almost demands that you kill a character you like. Even though I love all of those characters, and I would say Bel is probably my favorite ‘Foundation’ character, and I just adore Ben Daniels, it seemed appropriate.
How The Deaths In Foundation Season 2 Happened The demise of Hober and Riose comes with a sense of peace. The ship, which has Bel and Mallow on board, will be destroyed. The duo have no way of escaping their situation, and they find some solace in their circumstances. Bel and Mallow share a glass of wine. Moments later, their ship is destroyed, and they both die. It's a bittersweet farewell that will likely reverberate throughout Foundation if the series is renewed.
The death of Salvor Hardin happens when the character is killed by a Mentalic under the influence of Tellem. Goyer explained that, in the original plan, Salvor would have died in season 3 by The Mule. Goyer went on to note that the change is primarily for two reasons. The first is that it lets Gaal know the future is not set in stone, and it also has the impact of upending viewer expectations.
