Waymo, previously known as Google’s self-driving car project, will convert an existing supplier building in Detroit to begin producing autonomous vehicles by the end of this year
In February, Fiat Chrysler, said it is investing $4.5 billion to expand or upgrade five plants in the Detroit area that would preserve and create about 6,500 jobs.
Krafcik called the project the “world’s first factory 100%-dedicated to the mass production of Level 4 autonomous vehicles. But GM has been producing “near Level 4” Chevrolet Bolts at its Orion Township assembly plant north of Detroit, where it also produces conventional gasoline-fueled models. Ford has tested autonomous Fusion sedans since 2015, and plans to build its first self-driving cars for use in urban fleets by 2021 at a factory in Flat Rock, Mich. Aptiv, a technology company formerly part of Delphi Automotive, has done extensive testing of its navigation systems for several years.
Waymo is looking specifically for engineers and fleet coordinators. Krafcik didn’t specify how much the new jobs will pay.
