Wave return to Torero Stadium for Summer Cup match vs. Bay FC

San Diego Wave FC’s interim coach Paul Buckle will try to get his club back on track Saturday. Mired in 10th place in the National Women’s Soccer League standings and facing a scoring drought of one month and one day, San Diego Wave FC could use a change of scenery.The Wave’s home match against Bay FC will be played at USD’s Torero Stadium, where the team played most of its first two seasons before moving into the newly constructed Snapdragon Stadium. The 7 p.m.

San Diego will be without many of its top players. Forward/midfielder Jaedyn Shaw and defender Naomi Girma are with the United States Olympic team as it prepares for Thursday’s opener against Zambia. Kailen Sheridan will be in goal for Team Canada, and midfielder Emily van Egmond and defender Kaitlyn Torpey are playing for Australia.

The club signed defender Chai Cortez and goalkeeper Caroline DeLisle this week as National Team Replacement Players. Though both will be available to play Saturday, San Diego is expected to start Hillary Beall in goal.“Yeah, it’s pretty special, I’m not gonna lie,” Beall told reporters about starting Saturday.

San Diego, which is 3-7-6 this season in NWSL play, will try to back on track offensively. The club has scored just 12 goals in 18 matches, a skid that led to the firing of longtime coach Casey Stoney and questions about whether the defending NWSL Shield winners will qualify for the postseason.
