Agriculture Minister Murray Watt is in London reassuring the Brits over the FTA’s impact on their farmers and the climate, amid a sluggish parliamentary process.
Agriculture Minister Murray Watt has jetted to London as part of a government push to inject a sense of urgency into Britain’s ponderous passage of the Australia-UK free trade agreement., but it needs to be ratified by legislation passed in both parliaments – a job that Australia has finished but which is taking longer in Britain, much to exporters’ frustration.
He said most Australian producers will remain focused on the high-volume markets in Asia, but the UK represented a high-value market, which was ripe for more premium beef and sheepmeat. He also said Australian meat could fill seasonal gaps in the UK’s own production. Because Australian agricultural practices could be much less carbon-intensive than those in destination markets, he said, that could offset the higher transport emissions.
– have said the FTA should ideally be agreed by mid-year, before the European Parliament election cycle puts a brake on things.
