Hitters were making the right-hander wait until the last seconds on the pitch clock
Hitters must be ready to hit with eight seconds remaining on the pitch clock. If they’re not, the home-plate umpire must call a strike, according to the new rules.Cole lobbed one pitch way above Caballero’s head to send a message, then sent another by smoking him. After striking out Caballero swinging on a 98-mph fastball, Cole let out a shout. As he walked off the field with a smirk, he turned to the Mariners’ dugout on the third-base line and wagged his finger.
Cole lasted 7.1 innings, giving up one run on four hits while striking out eight and walking one. He threw 105 pitches. Clay Holmes pitched the final 1.2 innings for his ninth save. Meanwhile, outfielder Aaron Judge appears to be responding to a second platelet-rich plasma injection to his right big toe yet has not resumed baseball activities, the Yankees said Tuesday.
Judge was hurt June 3 when he ran into a wall while making a catch at Dodger Stadium. The Yankees announced the first injection on June 6 and said Judge had another last Thursday. “I’m encouraged by what I’m seeing,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said before the series opener against the Mariners. “He’s been slowly doing better and able to do more things, but do feel like hopefully that was the start of him really starting to make some real progress.”
