In the latest BeautySecrets, watch artist Salvia create her everyday extreme beauty routine.
. “I definitely get frustrated sometimes with how limiting physics can be and biology can be,” Salvia says. “I don’t think there should be really any limits.” The evidence is in the art posted to her Instagram feed: a photoshopped version of herself as “caterpillar girl” in a bathtub, head-to-toe flesh spikes protruding from limbs on a sidewalk stroll, a clear bubble attached to her stomach entitled “a womb with a view.
The beginnings of her post-physical evolution began in the form of drawings and paintings at the age of 13. Her initial subjects “were kind-of humans that had been modified heavily and they looked half-alien, half-animal,” Salvia says. After changing schools growing up “due to bullying and trying to overcome complex PTSD and depression,” she eventually started getting homeschooled. Now, many of her projects are based around her house and in her garden, where she feels safe and at home.
Makeup starts with a bare face, clear tubes, and superglue. “I love how futuristic they look,” she says, trimming the tubes to lay flat on her forehead. “Superglue’s not meant to be on your face,” she admits, waving away a stinging sensation. “I created this method myself, so I don’t actually know how you’re supposed to do it if you’re a professional makeup artist.” Next, her fair complexion is topped with white foundation. It’s a color that speaks to her in the realm of cosmetics.
After she brushes a skin-colored wig for a “frizzy, fluffy texture,” Salvia applies it to the back of her head. Then, it’s onto clothes: A dress she designed from layers and folds of nude lace is paired with patent white lace-up platforms for a significant lift. “I like how powerful I feel when I wear heels; I think I feel sad when I wear flat shoes,” Salvia says. The completed result is destined for a bicycle ride around Wales, one of Salvia’s favorite activities that often inspires new ideas.
“I’ve never really been interested in doing looks purely for the internet or purely for a project or a creation,” Salvia says. “I’ve always loved just looking like this, just for my day-to-day life. If I’m dressed and I’ve got my makeup on, sometimes just living and going out and interacting with the world can be its own performance and its own art piece because it can be so theatrical and beautiful.” Everyone is engaged in some kind of performance in their own way, she notes.
