José Ramírez is literally Superman…
Ramírez started the 10th as the automatic runner at second base and moved to third on a ground out by Josh Naylor. After Josh Bell struck out, Andrés Giménez fell behind in the count to K.C. lefty Aroldis Chapman. That’s when Ramírez took matters into his own hands, dancing down the third base line and dashing for home with a head-first slide to avoid the tag of catcher Salvador Perez.
Home plate umpire Jeremy Riggs originally ruled Ramírez out on the play, but acting manager DeMarlo Hale asked for a crew chief review, which resulted in the call being overturned and Cleveland taking a 3-2 lead. It was the first straight steal of home for Cleveland since Leonys Martin pulled off the feat at Detroit on June 15, 2019.
But Emmanuel Clase’s fifth blown save of the season in the bottom of the 10th resulted in a 4-3 Royals win, and the Guardians slipping into a first-place tie with the Twins in the AL Central.
