And the SCCF isn’t the only organization to see an uptick in nests this year. Researchers believe that, aside from the coronavirus-related speculations, conservation laws put into effect over the last few decades are finally starting to pay off.
“What we’re thinking is that the loggerheads are responding very well to all of the conservation measures that were put into place in the 1980s,” Kirt Rusenko, Ph.D., marine conservationist for the city of Boca Raton who works from the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. “That’s when lighting ordinances first started coming into fashion, and that’s just about a generation—up to 2010—because 20 to 30 years is about how long it takes turtles to grow up.
“The screen on top of the nest is to discourage predation,” Sloan said. They have been very effective in lowering nest depredation rates on Sanibel and Captiva.”
