The Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historical Site, where delegates met in 1836 to craft and sign the Texas Declaration of Independence, will get a $44 million update.

, will soon begin a two-year, $44 million construction project to upgrade and re-imagine the place where, in 1836, 59 delegates wrote and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence as revolution unfolded all around them.

Construction will begin in the fall of this year and is expected to last two full years, with parts of the site closed as the work continues. The plan is funded by $34 million appropriated by the Texas legislature in 2021 and by a $10 million fund-raising campaign by the Washington-on-the-Brazos Historical Foundation. The fund-raising campaign was co-chaired by Lois and Jim Kolkhorst, along with honorary chair John Nau III.

Work at the historic site should provide a whole new experience for visitors, with restoration of existing visitor center, where the focus is on the Convention of 1836. The Star of the Republic Museum looks at life for all who lived here — enslaved people included — during the time that Texas was a Republic. A new brick entrance will be constructed, and the conference center will be updated to accommodate corporate retreats and community meeting space.
