The liberal senator from Massachusetts addressed a crowd of hundreds, many of whom delighted in Amazon's decision to abandon its plans to build a second headquarters in Long Island City, Queens.
, lamented local leaders' willingness to accommodate Amazon's nationwide competition to house the next headquarters. In New York the deal amounted to more than $3 billion in as-of-right tax subsidies, based on the 25,000 to 40,000 jobs the company promised in exchange.
“You built a great fortune? Give a little bit back to the America that helped you build that great fortune," she said, to thunderous applause. Warren recalled how, in her childhood, after her father had suffered a serious heart attack and was unable to work, her mother had been able to save the family from losing their home by working a minimum wage job answering phones for Sears Roebuck.
