A wet weather system barrelling down Australia's east coast is set to bring severe thunderstorms to Queensland and New South Wales.

Thunderstorms started to develop over eastern parts of NSW on Monday bringing wind, rain and hail to coastal areas with conditions expected to escalate by Wednesday afternoon.

“As the rain band moves into southern New South Wales that system will continue to march eastward, as it does a very favourable environment will once again lead to widespread showers and storms flashing up throughout this afternoon." Brisbane and Sydney will cop wet weather with storms widespread across Queensland and NSW but"hit or miss" in severity. Picture: NCA NewsWire / Gaye Gerard

“Thunderstorms form when the air around us becomes really warm and humid, it’s full of moisture, and the warm air is going to rise due to convection and as it rises it cools, and the moisture in it begins to condense into tiny droplets of water or ice," he said.
