An estimated one million animals are killed each day in motor vehicle collisions in the United States alone.
We citizens have ownership of this problem, it is our wildlife, and we need to protect all of it. This roadkill is still a largely ignored problem that has not been seriously taken up by any major organizations. People have become inured to the daily slaughter, but these lives are worth grieving.
Wildlife warning signs have been shown to reduce collisions with animals, and can function to protect both human and non-human animal’s lives. Let us have more of them. One common sense solution would be to install reflective road signs that function as a memorial for animals killed on the road, as well as a new kind of warning sign for drivers. The silhouettes of animals commonly killed on our roads would be placed at the edge of the road, where smaller species are most likely to appear.
