Walmart is looking to take a bite out of the billions of dollars Americans spend on their dogs and cats as the megastore
on Tuesday three pet-focused services, including an online pharmacy that will compete with Chewy.com., where pet owners can purchase and order prescriptions for dogs, cats, horses and even livestock. The company plans to roll out 100 in-store veterinary clinics over the next 12 months, starting in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
It will also expand its range of pet brands and healthy pet foods, saying pet owners are"opting for more organic and grain-free food options and giving their pet vitamins and supplements." Across the board, Walmart said it hopes to bring down the cost of pet ownership, which it estimated can reach as much as $1,285 a year.to the American Pet Products Association, including about $30 billion on food and $18 billion on veterinary care. The association expects the total to hit $75.38 billion this year.around 14% and are expected to grow to about 25% by 2022. PetSmart has been capitalizing on this opportunity with its fast-growing e-commerce company Chewy.
