A massive fire in Plainfield, Indiana, sent huge plumes of smoke into the air and damaged a Walmart fulfillment center facility.in Plainfield will not reopen after a massive fire destroyed the building in March, throwing into question the livelihoods of more than a thousand of its workers.
The fulfillment center, at 9590 Allpoints Parkway, was damaged too significantly to reopen in the foreseeable future, according to the notice from Walmart.Fire contained at Plainfield Walmart facility thanks to 350 firefighters: What's next As of April 22, there were up to 957 employees from the fulfillment center who accepted new roles with the company, according to the notice. The employees who have not were notified the fulfillment center was closing April 1.
“We expect the resulting employment separations to be permanent,” the notice letter reads. “There is no union representative, recall or bumping rights. However, all separated associates can apply for open positions at other Walmart or Sam’s Club locations, including distribution and other facilities.” About 350 firefighters and 30 fire agencies, as well as other community partners, assisted in fighting the blaze at the 1.2-million-square-foot facility.
