Chris Waller will throw eight runners into the Winx Stakes as he looks for group 1 win number 150 at Randwick on Saturday.
Hall of Fame trainer Chris Waller admits that group 1 racing drives him these days as he enters the prime of his career and confesses to feeling strangely anxious heading into the first group 1 of the season at Randwick on Saturday.
“I have gone through all the systems around the stables and making sure everything’s happening properly because of the depth we have. We haven’t had that before.” The years since Winx have been kind to Waller – Caulfield Cups, a Melbourne Cup and a Golden Slipper. He keeps ticking off the group 1s. Waller always likes to take a lead from betting markets but suggested that Fangirl, which is a $4.80 second pick behind Zaaki, might not be his best chance of success.
“Hinged is not far off Fangirl; they do all their work together, and I can’t fault her either. I expect her to be the mover in the market.“Princess Grace has the benefit of that Australian preparation and has come back very well. She handled the wet in the Sapphire Stakes [where she was an eye-catching third before winning the Hawkesbury Crown] and from barrier one she could be a sneaky hope.”
