Hernandez's novel, Mga Ibong Mandaragit. It's published by Penguin Books, and is now being sold here by our distributor, Acres Philippines, and globally by Amazon. The book is a savvy pastiche of several texts, one of which is an article supposedly written by a Filipino student in the United States, in protest against the Bell Trade Act. Now that the Americans are back, perhaps this excerpt from the book might be instructive. The excerpt is titled 'Wall Street Binds the Philippines.
'In spite of the excessive publicity about the American way of life, no one enjoys it except the politicians, landlords and puppets of Wall Street and other supporters of the status quo. Only they have palaces surrounded by walls, flashy cars and air-conditioned offices. On the other hand, the worker, with six dependents, earns a pittance.Seventy-five out of 100 farmworkers have no land of their own. They are mere tenants.
