Scott Gimple wishes TheWalkingDead fans a happy new year and hypes 'all our epics ahead.'
The Walking Dead Universe is headed for a big 2023, hypes Rick & Michonne spinoff showrunner Scott M. Gimple. The Walking Dead began its reign as a cable TV monster way back in 2010. In 2022, the zombie drama ended its run with season 11, wrapping up a series that ran for 177 episodes on its own, while spawning multiple spinoffs including Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond and Tales of the Walking Dead.
But AMC already made it abundantly clear that 2022 would mark not the end of the Walking Dead universe, but only a transition to a new beginning. And that new beginning kicks off in a big way in 2023, with the release of a trio of spinoff shows: Dead City with Negan and Maggie, Daryl Dixon and Rick & Michonne.
The promise of Rick and Michonne being reunited would by itself probably be enough to have Walking Dead fans tingling with excitement. But their spinoff also promises big revelations about the mysterious CRM, and could serve to set up some kind of ultimate TWD universe endgame.
Compared to what those two epic spinoffs seemingly have in store, The Walking Dead: Dead City starring Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan may seem slightly underwhelming, with its promise of more Maggie and Negan beefing but in a new setting. But it’s possible Dead City could have something else up its sleeve besides the promise of Negan reverting to his old evil ways, and Maggie being placed in new danger.
