For WakandaForever, costume designer Ruth Carter not only had to elevate the characters’ looks, but also make everything functional underwater: 'It was impossible, but we made it.”

The fact that nearly every major character would at some point be in the water also meant that Carter had to rethink the materials she would be using. “What we had built in the first film was no longer available to us because it was built of leather and raffia and all those things that get destroyed in water,” she says. “So we had to start over and…mold and recreate things in silicone.”Namor, the leader of Talokan, is a being of two worlds.

For Carter, this meant creating costumes that would reflect these underwater people’s way of life, while also adding in thoughtful details and adornments that reflected Namor’s position as a leader. For his feathered headdress, they had to create multiple versions—some for outside of the water and some that were silicone-based and water-ready.

As for the look of the Talokanil people, they wanted it to be connected to Mayan culture while also utilizing what would be available in the sea, like kelp leaves and fish fins. Carter and her team spoke to oceanic experts who helped them discover what else from the seafloor could be used in the costumes, like fish bones.
