While WA had the biggest emissions rise, a few other states also saw an uptick in emissions in 2022 compared with the previous year. "A bit less than half of this increase was due to energy related greenhouse gas emissions, and most of the rest due to a reduction in the amount of carbon stored in forest and land.
"This was in part because sequestration was higher in 2021 due to the La Nina event, which coincided with increased rainfall and an associated increase in vegetation."Decarbonisation remains a priority for the Cook Government, which is investing more than $3 billion in wind generation and energy storage.WA Greens MP Brad Pettitt said it was "deeply troubling" to see the state's emissions continue to rise.
