The idea of a child living holed up in a motel room without enough food or clothing is abhorrent.
When conditions are so bad in the domestic environment that a child is considered to be safer living in out-of-home care, then a great responsibility is placed on the state.
As we report today, Department of Communities and Justice data shows that caseworker vacancy rates have leapt from two per cent in the last quarter of 2021-2022 to seven per cent. Those numbers equate to 160 full-time employees. In some regions it was double the state average and in Sydney’s west and south-west it stands at 10 per cent.One of the worst consequences is the failure to meet prescribed response times in the most concerning cases known as Risk of Significant Harm .
