Vice President Kamala Harris plans to travel to more than a dozen colleges and universities in swing states that will be critical to her reelection hopes alongside President Biden.
The “Fight for Our Freedoms College Tour” will begin Sept. 14 at Hampton University in Virginia and include stops at schools in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada and Wisconsin, according to ABC News, which first reported on the tour plans.This time, the pair faces low approval ratings and an electorate that is skeptical of Mr. Biden’s age, so turnout among young people could make or break the reelection bid.
Ms. Harris plans to visit a variety of institutions — including four-year schools, community colleges, technical colleges, and historically black colleges and universities — and address issues that are important to college-age Americans. “This generation is critical to the urgent issues that are at stake right now for our future,” Ms. Harris told ABC.Ms. Harris’ approval rating has been underwater since late 2021. Roughly 40% of Americans disapprove of her performance, compared to more than 51% who disapprove, according to a FiveThirtyEight average.
Aiming to turn the tide heading into 2024, Ms. Harris has maintained an aggressive travel schedule that has included stops around the country to decry GOP attempts to limit abortion access. She recently visited Indonesia for a major summit of Asian leaders instead of Mr. Biden, who is preparing to travel to India for the Group of 20 summit.
