The call for post-referendum “mourning” just continues the emotional blackmail that the Yes campaign relied upon. It will do nothing to help people in remote communities.
The referendum is over with a win for the No camp. So we should all be able to move on, right? Well, not exactly.

The result will have minimal impact on race relations for the majority of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
But the term “reconciliation”, although widely used, is typically never defined. On the Reconciliation WA webpage, it states that reconciliation “is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider community”. That’s a good definition. I would also add that reconciliation includes improving the health and wellbeing of Indigenous Australians – something I know all Australians, both Yes and No voters, care about.
