“We felt that we would take a leadership position in being a significant funder, and we didn’t arrive lightly at that,” Mr Traill toldMichael Traill: “I do have a sense that if a broader segment of the population understood those issues, then perhaps the result could have been different.”“But we feel really proud to have been involved.
The foundation – set up by the late Ramsay Health Care founder and philanthropist, Paul Ramsay – arrived at the funding quantum of $7 million after the board was informed a campaign would likely cost around $30 to $40 million to be effective. “What it could have done better was – apart from the fact the timing was wrong – that we needed to profile more clearly what the actual issues, challenges and solutions are.“We’ve learnt a lot, and the programs where there’s been leadership engagement with the community and elevation of community voices are the ones that have worked.
