Australians have rejected an Indigenous Voice to parliament in a bleak night for the Yes campaign and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Follow updates here.
Leading Yes campaigner and referendum working group member Thomas Mayo said he was “devastated” by the outcome, to which he attributed a “disgusting” and “dishonest” No campaign.
NSW Senator Andrew Bragg, one of the few Liberals to support the Voice, blamed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for the defeat. He cited the Yes campaign’s refusal to establish a parliamentary inquiry into constitutional reform models, not publishing an exposure draft of the Voice and its functions in order to provide detail, and “the failure to compromise”.
