Vitamin D levels of 10 nmol/L or less associated with two to three-fold increase in risk of death.
A vitamin D level of 50 nmol/L, which is the commonly used cut-off value for vitamin D deficiency, was used in the study as a reference value for comparing other vitamin D levels.Researchers then matched this data with the Austrian national register of deaths to see how many participants died in the follow-up period, which for some participants lasted for nearly 20 years.
In contrast, high levels of vitamin D, set at 90 nmol/L or greater, were associated with a 30 to 40% reduced risk in all-cause mortality. When looking at specific causes of death, the strongest associations were not between vitamin D and cardiovascular disease or cancer, a finding which surprised the authors.
