A Malaysian man claims he did not intentionally injure his eye to receive a large insurance payout.

A visually impaired man was brought before the Magistrate's Court in Butterworth yesterday, accused of deliberately injuring his left eye to claim a RM1 million insurance payout in June 2023. The accused, Tan Kok Guan, 52, however pleaded not guilty after the charges against him were read out by an interpreter before Magistrate Siti Zulaikha Nordin @ Ghani.

According to the charge, he was accused of attempting to make a suspected fraudulent insurance claim and deliberately inflicting injury on his left eye to obtain compensation worth RM1 million. The offense was allegedly committed between 9 am and 6 pm at Kampung Gajah, Butterworth in Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district on June 8, 2023. For the second charge, the unemployed father of three was accused of deceiving an insurance company to make a false claim, leading the company to deposit RM4,153.57 into his Maybank account. He was accused of committing this offense also between 9 am and 6 pm at Jalan Kampung Gajah, Kampung Paya, Butterworth on July 20 of the same year. For both charges, he was accused under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of not less than one year and not more than 10 years imprisonment and caning, besides being liable to a fine, if found guilty. The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Airina Syazreena Zainurin while the accused was represented by lawyer, Yaw Xinying. The Magistrate then allowed the accused to be released on bail of RM10,000 for both charges with one surety and set February 20 as the date for mention and submission of case documents.-UTUSA
