Swimmers at an idyllic river destination are being told to stay out of the water after high levels of faecal matter are detected.
The council says it hasn't promoted The Promised Land as a tourist destination "for years".abc.net.au/news/promised-land-swimming-hole-bellingen-faecal-contamination/101844606Some tourist spots are struggling to cope with their renewed popularity as visitors return to summer holiday hangouts for the first time since the pandemic.
Bellingen Shire Council mayor Steve Allan said high visitation to the remote setting was not a new issue for the council.The stunning Never Never River and The Promised Land are set within Tuckers Nob State Forest.That means there are no public toilets, no rubbish bins, and minimal parking. But that hasn't stopped thousands of people from visiting the scenic swimming spot.
Cr Allan said the council did not promote The Promised Land as a tourist destination and hadn't for years.
