The high-profile broadcaster will quit mornings on radio, which she has hosted since 2019.

Virginia Trioli will quit ABC radio next month to become the host of a new prime-time arts interview program for ABC TV. The Melbourne mornings host made the announcement on air just after 9am on Thursday. Her replacement will be announced on Friday’s show.

Trioli has been the host of ABC Melbourne’s morning program since 2019, but has been a regular face and voice in the early part of the day for ABC audiences for almost two decades. “Life makes its own demands, and now is the right time to heed those,” she told listeners on Thursday morning. In 2005, she moved to Sydney to host ABC’s morning radio shift, leaving that role at the end of 2007.

Earlier this year, Trioli took an extended leave of absence from her program to deal with what she has described as “a long and complex summer of family illness”. A number of hosts filled in for her over the three months she was absent.“After many years of daily broadcasting, and almost two decades of rising for the toughest alarms the ABC has to offer, life circumstances require me to work and live differently now,” Trioli said on Thursday.

“My thanks to the many ABC Melbourne colleagues I’ve been so lucky to work with, but most importantly, my deepest thanks always to our amazing radio audience, who welcomed me so warmly. Only we will ever understand how these last four years have felt.” The departure of one of the ABC’s most high-profile personalities comes at a time when the broadcaster is grappling with a wide-ranging review of its programming and operations, and after a long period of audience decline. It also follows the departure of afternoons host, ABC Melbourne increased its share of listening slightly to 7.2 per cent of the total audience . The morning shift was down by the same margin, from a 7.6 per cent share to 7.5.
