Martha Huynh Mau Phuong stands on the bank of the Sia River, looking at the once-thriving waterway inthat has become a source of sorrow. She no longer dares to raise fish in the river as she did in the past.
A long heat wave, which lasted from May to August, had left the river so low that it became uninhabitable for her fish. She attributes the collapse of local fish farming to climate change, which has caused drastic weather patterns and frequent natural disasters. The region — home to more than 20 million people — regularly experiences extreme heat, droughts, and saltwater intrusion.
Phan Dinh Phuc, head of the local agricultural cooperative, said that the Quang Phu commune has 13,366 residents who primarily engage in farming and traditional handicrafts. He said severe storms and extreme cold spells from November 2023 to February this year caused extensive crop damage.His family has been farming for generations, but he said they have never experienced weather conditions as unfavorable as they are now.
Viet carries sand and gravel to earn 350,000 dong a day to support their family, while his wife trades banana leaves, fruit, or poultry.
