Raven Software’s vote to unionize its QA team is historic, but getting Activision Blizzard to actually listen will require a lot more work.
Quality assurance tester Becca Aigner said during a recentthat GWA was able to follow the examples set by A Better ABK. The group settled on the name Game Workers Alliance in hopes others in games would rally behind the bigger cause to improve workplace conditions. “What Raven was experiencing is not unique to the industry,” Aigner said. “This is an industrywide problem.”
“We want to work with leadership, full stop, end of day,” Aigner said. “There is a disconnect here and we want to reconnect.” Kinema says that while a smaller unit is an imperfect solution to the big picture of organizing, workers earning any semblance of power is a crucial step. “Even if we were to magically organize everybody, we have to get what we can. We [have] got to start somewhere.”
