A Victorian Liberal MP has called for the upcoming Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum to be scrapped altogether, as leader John Pesutto faces questions about his position.

has allowed its members to openly support or oppose the Voice ahead of the vote later this year.

Mr Mulholland described it as “the most consequential democratic decision” Victorians will make, which seeks to put race at the centre of how Australia is governed. “It’s time for the Prime Minister to do what he did with the local government referendum back in 2013, realise it doesn’t have support and pull it,” he said.

“This morning the shadow cabinet made a decision that we will have a non-binding position on the upcoming Voice referendum,” he told reporters on May 1.
