It started out as a political gimmick, but the slogan has become reality. The Age is embracing that label.
If you believe the number plates, and I do, Victoria is Australia’s “education state”. It sounds like little more than glib sloganeering, but it’s more than that.. Victorian students achieved particularly strong results for reading across grades 3, 5, 7 and 9, and year 3 numeracy.The state is also home to Melbourne University, which is Australia’s top-ranked institution according to Quacquarelli Symonds, an organisation that assesses the world’s higher education sector.
Schools, kindergartens and universities are not the only institutions contributing to the “education state” moniker. Victoria’s vocational education sector is booming too. But as, the enormous spike in student visas since the end of lockdowns has not necessarily translated into students sitting in classrooms at Melbourne’s training colleges. It has instead created a phenomenon he labelled “ghost colleges”.
