Victoria Police's chief commissioner has announced 79 actions to achieve better outcomes for Aboriginal people, as part of the force's response to the state's truth-telling inquiry.
As part of its response to the state's truth-telling inquiry, Victoria Police has committed to dozens of reforms to improve its relationship with Aboriginal people.
Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton has announced his commitment to complete 79 reforms by the end of 2025 as part of the force's response to the Yoorrook Justice Commission — the state's ongoing Indigenous truth-telling inquiry. It has also promised to review the oversight of police complaints made by Aboriginal people, and monitor the outcomes of such complaints.
In May last year, Chief Commissioner Patton made a formal apology for the harms police have caused to First Peoples As part of the 79 actions, Victoria Police indicated it would support any independent oversight body that is investigating complaints made by Aboriginal people."If government deems it appropriate to establish another external oversight body, we will happily operate within whatever environment government deems appropriate," he said.Victoria Police said six of its 79 reforms were already complete.
"First Peoples have long suffered from broken promises and unfulfilled commitments following momentous apologies and acknowledgements," the Wergaia/Wamba Wamba Elder said.
