Premier Daniel Andrews declined to give evidence, but the committee heard he wrote to witnesses to warn them against disclosing information viewed as confidential.

A Senate committee has accused the Victorian government of actively hindering its inquiry into the state’s ill-fated 2026 Commonwealth Games bid.

Earlier on Thursday, Andrews would not commit to reading the interim report, describing it as a political stunt led by Nationals senators.“I think we all know in advance what that’s about, it’s a political stunt. It’s a political stunt,” he said on Thursday morning. “We’re still trying to get to the bottom of exactly what happened. I probably won’t have time this evening to go through all of the barriers we faced as a committee,” Canavan said in parliament on Thursday afternoon.

Party for renters: Greens to focus on tenant rights as housing bill expected to pass SenateParty for renters: Greens to focus on tenant rights as housing bill expected to pass SenateThe Greens are vowing to make tenants' rights the main sticking point for supporting future government legislation on housing. The party believes it could stare down the threat of an early election by pitching itself as the party for renters. These comments come after a late-night Senate session decided the Housing Australia Future Fund would pass through parliament before Question Time on Wednesday. According to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, this legislation is the “single biggest investment in housing in more than a decade”. In exchange for passing this bill, the Greens backed down on their demands for a national rent freeze.
